What is Tarawih Prayer?
صَلَاةُ التَّرَاوِيح
Learn about Tarawih — the special nightly prayer in Ramadan, its history, number of Rakats, and how it is performed.
The Night Prayer of Ramadan
Tarawih is a special Sunnah prayer performed in Ramadan, after Isha prayer. Its name comes from the Arabic "tarwiha" — meaning a pause for rest — as the early Muslims would rest between every 4 Rakats. It is one of the most beloved acts of Ramadan and an opportunity to listen to the recitation of the Quran.
When is Tarawih Prayed?
Tarawih is prayed every night throughout the month of Ramadan, after Isha prayer and before Witr. It begins from the first night of Ramadan. In many masajid, the complete Quran (Khatam) is recited over the course of Ramadan.
How Many Rakats?
The scholarly consensus in the Hanafi, Maliki, and many other schools is 20 Rakats. This is based on the practice established by Umar ibn al-Khattab RA with the consensus of the Companions. Some scholars hold 8 Rakats as sufficient, based on the Prophet's ﷺ personal practice (which was not limited to Ramadan). Both positions have scholarly support.
The History of Tarawih
The Prophet ﷺ prayed Tarawih in congregation for 2–3 nights, then stopped for fear it would become obligatory. People then prayed individually. During the caliphate of Umar RA, he reorganised the congregation, appointing Ubayy ibn Ka'b RA to lead 20 Rakats of Tarawih — the Companions agreed without objection, making this an established Sunnah.
Congregation vs Solo
Tarawih in congregation is more virtuous. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever stands in prayer during Ramadan with faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." (Bukhari/Muslim). Even joining the congregation for part of the prayer earns significant reward.

Is Tarawih obligatory?
Tarawih is Sunnah Muakkadah (strongly emphasised Sunnah) in the Hanafi school — it is not Farz or Wajib, but regularly omitting it without valid reason is blameworthy.
Can women pray Tarawih at home?
Yes. Women can pray Tarawih at home — alone or in a women-only congregation led by one of them. They may also attend the masjid, though most scholars hold that praying at home is generally better for women.
What is the best time for Tarawih?
Tarawih is prayed after Isha and before Witr. The earlier it is prayed (right after Isha) the better, to allow the community to rest. Witr should be prayed at the end of Tarawih.
