Adhan — The Call to Prayer

The Adhan is the Islamic call to prayer, announced five times daily. Each phrase is recited the number of times shown.

Allahu Akbar
Allah is the Greatest

أَشْهَدُ أَن لَّا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ
Ash-hadu an la ilaha ill-Allah
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَّسُولُ اللهِ
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasulullah
I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is the Messenger of Allah

حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ
Hayya 'alas-salah
Come to prayer
Response: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah — There is no power or might except with Allah

Hayya 'alal-falah
Come to success
Response: La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah — There is no power or might except with Allah

Fajr Addition

الصَّلَاةُ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ النَّوْمِ

As-salatu khayrun minan-nawm

Prayer is better than sleep

This phrase is added in the Fajr (dawn) Adhan only, after Hayya alal-falah.

Dua After the Adhan

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ
Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da'watit-tammati was-salatil qa'imati ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilata wab'athu maqamam mahmudanil-ladhi wa'adtahu
O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the intercession and honour, and raise him to the praised station that You have promised him
